The Natura 2000 is a network of protected areas throughout the EU and it is considered the largest coherent group of protected areas in the world. Established in 1992 with the long term aim of protecting Europe’s most vulnerable and threatened species and habitats.

Event Manager

Objective: Designation or expansion of three marine protected areas in the Mediterranean

Work: Organised seminar to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to give their views and suggestions on how to compromise with government and businesses that benefited from these areas.

—> Managed event budget and was accountable for final invoice reconciliation, check requests, and expense allocation

—> Coordinated Dr Leyla Knittweis-Mifsud and Dr Julian Evans from the University of Malta’s Department of Biology to lead seminar to provide their expertise and support

—> Along with; Transport Malta (Ports and Yachting Directorate), the Professional Diving Schools Association, Atlam Diving Club, Birdlife Malta, University of Malta (Department of Geography), and the Federation of Amateur Fishing Associations

—> Over 300 attendees

Accomplished: Maltese government announced the designation and expansion of eight marine protected areas in the Mediterranean, when our initial goal was just three
